Installing NX

at NTNU

The process of installing NX on your computer is quite simple but require a few things. Here is a step-by-step guide of the process. In addition, note that some of the photos are actually interactive slideshows with a visual reference to your current step in the process.

Before installing

  • You need at least 6 GB of free storage space on your main drive.
  • You have to have administrative rights on your computer.
  • You are required to be connected to the NTNU network.
  • You need a 64-bit version of Windows.

Connecting to the NTNU network

  • If you are at campus, you can simply connect via cable or Eduroam.
  • If you are not at campus, you need to use a VPN (Virtual Private Network)  to connect to the NTNU network. Follow the instructions found in the following link to enable a VPN-connection to NTNU:

Connecting to the IVT-faculty server

After connecting to the NTNU network as a whole, we need to connect to the specific faculty server, where the NX-files are kept. This can be done using the following steps:

  • In the start menu, right-click on Computer and select “Map network drive…”.
  • In the “Drive:”-dropdown menu choose an unused drive, for instance the “Z:”-drive.
  • In the “Folder:”-box enter: \\iipm-plm1.ivt.ntnu.no\ugs_install\UGS_Install
  • When prompted for a username and password write WIN-NTNU-NO\username. Use your normal NTNU-username and password, and note the use of backslash, not forward slash.

Installing the NX program files

  • Open the UGS_Install folder, which should be found under “Computer”, and Network Location.
  • Follow this path: NX9.0 > nx-9.0.0-64bit > dvdrom090 > Launch.
  • If the installation does not work, try copying the files over to your own computer before installing. Or if prompted with a new request for login information, use WIN-NTNU-NO\username again.
  • Once the NX 9.0 installation window is opened select install NX, then press next and select the “typical” installation.
  • Save the files under C:\Program Files\Siemens\NX 9.0\
  • You will then be prompted for a license server. If it is not shown automatically, enter the following: 28000@nx.lisens.ntnu.no.
  • After the installation is completed, restart your computer. If not you will likely get an error upon starting the program.

Patching NX

  • Open the UGS_Install folder, which should be found under “Computer”, and Network Location.
  • Follow this path: NX9.0 > Patches > nx-9.0.2 > dvdrom0902_05 > Launch
  • If the installation does not work, try copying the files over to your own computer before installing. Or if prompted with a new request for login information, use WIN-NTNU-NO\username again.
  • After the installation is completed, restart your computer. If not you will likely get an error upon starting the program.

If you are experiencing license related issues

  • SOLUTION 1: Restart your computer and open NX again.
  • SOLUTION 2: If this did not work, NX 9.0 has a preinstalled “licensing tool”, to help you add “licensebundles” manually.
  • This tool can be found by accessing the start menu > All Programs > Siemens NX 9.0 > NX Licensing tools.
  • After the program is opened, press “Bundle Settings”.
  • In the pop-up window there will be three boxes, named “Available Bundles”, “Applied Bundles” and “Bundle Components”.
  • If there are any bundles in the “Available Bundles” box, mark these and use the right-facing arrow to move them over to “Applied Bundles”.
  • Press “Apply” and restart the computer.
  • Solution 3: The last method is adding the bundles and license server ourselves, without help from the preinstalled software.
  • Rightclick “Computer” and enter “Preferences” > “Advanced system settings” > “Enviornment variables…”
  • Under “System variables” there is supposed to be a variable named “UGS_LICENSE_BUNDLE” with the value “ACD31;ACD30”. If this bundle does not exist, it has to be created by pressing “new…” and plotting in the given information.
  • Then look for a system variable named “SPLM_LICENSE_SERVER” with the value “28000@nx.lisens.ntnu.no”. If this does not exist, it must also be created.
Alternately, you should use the system variable “UGS_LICENSE_SERVER” instead if you are using NX8.5 or older.
  • Restart the computer and start NX. If you are still experiencing issues, please leave a post at the NX-portal forum.

If you are using other operating systems than windows

There is a version of NX for Mac, but using it is not recommended. As a student of NTNU you should install Windows, using Bootcamp instead. If you are using neither Mac or windows, you need to aquire windows in some other way. If you need help installing windows through Bootcamp you can seek out Gurutjenesten at http://drift.idi.ntnu.no/guru/
